Local

Most tagging stations are reporting lower-than-average numbers of whitetails, but often the deer that are being taken are good-sized; including many trophy bucks.
Although it’s too early in the season to predict a final harvest count, most of the state’s deer biologists believe that last winter’s deep snows and cold temperatures will keep this year’s success rate down, especially in Northern and Eastern Maine, and in the western mountains. If weather conditions over the final weeks of the season remain favorable, Midcoast hunters should — according to the experts — have an average season.
